As many of you know, Fairfield Warde High School hosts a blood drive every year—usually in the spring. It’s a chance for our school community to step up and donate a pint of blood to the American Red Cross. That blood is then sent to hospitals and given to patients in need.
Our most recent drive, held on April 3rd, collected 33 pints. That brings our school’s running total to 1,020 pints donated. That’s 1,020 opportunities to save a life—all thanks to our students, staff, and faculty who’ve participated over the years. And the best part? The process takes just 8 to 10 minutes. So—how can you get involved?
It’s easy. Blood drives are always announced around the school. Student volunteers visit sophomore, junior, and senior homerooms to distribute sign-up forms and answer questions. They also run a table outside the cafeteria for a few lunch periods, handing out forms and information. If you miss them, no problem—just stop by P33 and speak with Mrs. Costen, our coordinator. She’ll get you set up.
Once you’ve signed up, you can turn in your permission slip either at the cafeteria table or directly to Mrs. Costen. If you’re 16, there’s an additional form you’ll need, which can be provided upon request.
To prepare: drink extra fluids the day before (but skip hot drinks), get a good meal in, and avoid intense activity right beforehand. Bring a photo ID to your appointment. Before donating, a quick health check will be done—blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and hemoglobin. If anything’s off, you won’t be cleared to donate, so don’t worry.
Afterward, you’ll head to the refreshment table for snacks, juice, and water. You’ll rest there for about 10–15 minutes to make sure you’re feeling okay before heading back to class.
FWHS typically hosts one or two blood drives each year, but if you want to donate outside of school, you can always visit redcrossblood.org to find a drive near you.
