Warde Seniors Engage with Congressman Himes on AI, Politics, and More

Warde seniors in AP Government and Politics got a break from their usual class routine this Tuesday when Congressman Jim Himes visited Warde High School’s lecture hall—ready to take on their toughest questions. From AI and TikTok to the crisis in the Middle East, no topic was off-limits.

Himes, a Democrat representing Connecticut’s 4th District since 2009, serves on the Financial Services Committee, drawing on his experience on Wall Street. He is also the Ranking Member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

During his visit, Himes tackled the challenge of representing a district with both some of the wealthiest and most economically disadvantaged communities in the country. He emphasized the importance of listening to all voices, regardless of income level.

In addition to the AP Government students, the discussion included teachers Mr. Drexel and Ms. MacIntosh, Fairfield Public Schools Superintendent Michael J. Testani, and Warde Principal Paul Cavanna.

Class of 2025 President Jayri Engram, who interned for Congressman Himes, helped coordinate the visit. Reflecting on the experience, Engram noted, “The government has the privilege of answering the call. Because Congressman Himes gave me the opportunity, I got to answer the call as well this summer.”

When it was time for questions, hands shot up across the room—not just from students, but from the Superintendent and Principal, too. No one wanted to miss their chance to press Himes on the issues that mattered to them.

Mr. Drexel appreciated Himes’ ability to connect with students, observing, “His speaking level was perfect for high schoolers—he didn’t talk down to them.”

Senior Julie Park echoed this sentiment, saying, “I valued how he didn’t try to avoid questions. He answered them very straightforwardly.”

Not everyone was impressed. Sema Mansour felt “his responses lacked depth and were overly neutral.”

Regardless of differing opinions, one thing was clear: Himes’ visit sparked discussion. His presence in the classroom underscored the importance of civic engagement, showing students that their voices matter. By speaking with them directly, he not only offered a firsthand look at public service but also encouraged seniors to take an active role in shaping their future.
